SECURITY AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Credit card companies continue to develop new ways to protect their customers in the field of credit fraud and theft. But while new chip technology helps verify the authenticity of a purchase by providing unique magnetic signatures after every transaction, it won’t protect against a stolen card, where the thief has access to the magnetic strip and the chip.

But that might be a fear from yesterday.

Nevada company SmartMetric has introduced the first biometric card in the market, the SmartMetric credit card, which can identify and verify its authorized users via a fingerprint scanner installed on the face of the card.

With this, credit card thieves won’t be able to verify sales. SmartMetric cards are usable on all card reader platforms and ATMs while conforming to ISO and banking industry standards.

SmartMetric created the technology in response to an overwhelming number of polled customers concerned that credit card theft is a real threat to their financial security. Of those polled, 80 percent agreed that theft and fraud is a concern, and 66 percent are willing to pay more for a card that offers improved security.

Miniature Fingerprint Scanners May Be The Solution To $16 Billion In Fraud

Retailers may soon see up to one million cards in stores soon.

Credit card fraud worldwide losses incurred by card issuers, merchants, and acquirers totaled $16.31 billion in 2014, a 19 percent increase over 2013, according to figures released by the Nilson Report. It also marked the fourth consecutive year that total card volume was outpaced by fraud losses.

SmartMetric president and CEO Chaya Hendrick asserted that the answer is a safer payments solution that incorporates biometrics into the security of transaction payment information.

SmartMetric is the creator of the biometric fingerprint activated credit and debit card, and the payments card solution works with existing chip card readers and ATMs with no additional hardware or system requirements. Using biometrics for authentication may be the next big step for payment solutions systems.

“What amazes so many banks and credit card issuers is the fact that we have embedded a fully functional miniature fingerprint scanner inside a credit card while conforming to industry standards regarding card size and thickness. And, the Banks are able to issue our biometric cards without having to change any existing chip card readers or ATM's,” stated Hendrick in an email.

With a built in fingerprint reader, the card is activated when the registered user swipes his or her finger over the sensor on the card. This multi-level authentication means that unauthorized use of the card is now highly unlikely.

While biometrics are not a new concept for authentication and identity purposes, SmartMetric is the only biometric card in the world that can be used across card reader platforms including ATM's while conforming to ISO and banking industry standards. Business Solutions Magazine examined the possibilities of biometrics for payments solutions last year, including fingerprints; face recognition, DNA, and iris recognition.

And recently, some payments experts and players have started to test whether biometrics could be useful for more than just mobile payments. In late 2015, Visa announced that it would start using biometrics on chip cards at some Absa Bank ATMs in South Africa. The idea is for consumers to verify their identities while the card's chip completes the transaction.

SmartMetric is now actively engaged in talks with credit card issuing Banks around the world who fully expect the biometric fingerprint protected card to satisfy customer concerns about card fraud, while at the same time mitigating their own card fraud losses.

SmartMetric specializes in miniature electronic systems and software for use in Biometric identification and validation. Hardware and software engineering are done internally. The Company can deliver unique and cutting edge enterprise-class products to the Payments industry, as well as Corporate and Government sectors.

The new cards would help retailers reduce fraud without requiring any new investments in terms of hardware or software, creating a “win/win” situation for merchants, card issuers, and consumers alike.

New multi-function access control and identity card in development: a biometric security product for use by government and business

Las Vegas—June 2, 2016—-“Our very smart new miniature biometric security card will bring 100% identity verification including securing perimeter entry points, across campus on-the-spot identity checking, physical building entry control along with the computer network log. This multi-function access control and identity card, no thicker than a standard credit card, brings to the world of security a brand new and cutting edge product,” notes SmartMetric’s President & CEO, Chaya Hendrick.

For example: RFID technology inside the card is used to send a signal to doorway locks for secure physical access control while on its surface the card has a smartcard chip that secures a log-on to computer networks. The card has visual identity with on-the-spot ID verification among other features. This includes lights that shine green or red following an on-card fingerprint scan by the cardholder at a security desk, or anywhere on a government or business inside or outside the building.

“We have spent over a decade in research and development in order to make a credit card with a fingerprint scanner built inside the card. Based on this R&D, we are now able to move relatively quickly into bringing to market a world leading biometric-based multi-function access control and identity card that is no thicker than a standard credit card,” concludes Ms. Hendrick.

SmartMetric in talks with banks for biometric scanner on credit cards

GRC & Fraud Software Journal

SmartMetric, Inc. has entered into talks with banks in the United States and other countries for the adoption of its biometric fingerprint-protected credit and debit cards.

Each card features a micro-biometric scanner that allows the owner to scan his or her fingerprint before activating it at ATMs and at points of sale.

What SmartMetric calls “the world’s first sub-micro miniature fingerprint scanner” sits inside debit and credit cards. The scanner reads the index finger’s print as the owner runs his fingertip across the card’s face.

But do banks have to install new software or integrate the customer scan into its own platforms?

“The fingerprint is stored inside the card and never leaves the card,” says Chaya Hendrick, SmartMetric president and CEO. “Banks don’t require additional software for it to work with their systems.”

“Banks are also able to issue our biometric cards without having to change any existing chip card readers or ATM’s,” Hendrick said.

According to Hendrick, the new card allows banks to reduce fraud by preventing anyone except the card’s owner from using it. No one can drain a customer’s account or purchase items without the card owner’s permission.

The card is expected to reduce fraud, which has reached about $16 billion annually, the company said.

ORLANDO, Fla.–A new fingerprint scanner that actually resides inside a credit or debit card has been introduced here at the Payments Summit.

The technology is from SmartMetric, Inc., which says it has developed the world’s first sub-micro miniature fingerprint scanner that sits inside the plastic cards. The goal is to improve security at the point of sale, as the card cannot be used without the cardholder swiping their finger on the plastic.

The company’s CEO said it is prepared to ship up to one-million of the cards per month.
